This is part II of an amazing discussion with Dr. Craig von Buseck. I learned so much about Ulysses Grant and here we talk about his character, his accomplishments (and civil rights legislation that was passed 90 years before modern civil rights legislation), and how he met and overcame the most difficult challenge of his life.
If you missed Part I, go back one episode. In that episode, we talked about the lost-cause school, Grant’s early life and business failures, his method of leading his men during the Civil war, and his formula for success.

What do you really know about Ulysses Grant? In this episode you will learn why your understanding is probably wrong.
If you are like most of us, you only associate him with the concept of the war of attrition. Compared to Lee, Grant is a knuckle-dragger in the popular imagination. But Grant was an amazing servant leader. Really. I was surprised by this amazing discussion with Dr. Craig von Buseck.
This is the first part of a two-part conversation. In this episode we talk about the lost-cause school, Grant’s early life and business failures, his method of leading his men during the Civil war, and his formula for success.
In the next episode, we will talk about his achievements during his presidency, why it was far better than you think, and how he overcame the greatest challenge of his life just before his death.

In this episode, I interview Dennis Mossburg. Dennis Spent 18 years as in the prisons system, much of it as an Incident Command System (ICS), Type III Operations Section Chief. He has a rather interesting perspective on leadership as a consequence of his unique experience. You will hear this, but you will also hear core leadership principles as he talks.
He will discuss leadership in complex situations, how to deal with inmates effectively, and how to lead Type-A personalities.
He also wrote a book, Reflections on Leadership. You can find the book here:

Wednesday Mar 31, 2021
In this episode, I am releasing the second part of a conversation with Kirsten Ross Vogel. Kirsten is a podcaster and
She talks about the value that we bring to the table. Specifically, she will talk about feelings of not being good enough. She talks about how people pleasers are actually trying to control others, how the imposter syndrome works, and what to do if you don’t have credentials.
She completely altered my understanding of people-pleasing. I was blown away by her reframing of the subject.

LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION [PART I] [EPISODE 146]
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021

In this short episode, Kenny discusses communication and leadership. I asked Kenny why everyone thinks that they can communicate, but communication issues plague organizations. What is going on?
Kenny explained the way we should think about communication. If you get this, it changes EVERYTHING about how you approach the subject of communication. I PROMISE. HIS ANSWER IS A GAME-CHANGER.
If you enjoyed this, listen to longer segments—Part II and Part III (each are roughly a half hour) follow in episode 147 and 148. I intentionally keep these episodes to a manageable size for listeners’ convenience.

HOW TO LEAD WELL AT HOME [EPISODE 145]
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
In this episode, I again interview Jeff Carlucci. Jeff is my former colleague at StoneBridge School where I taught from 1999-2004. Jeff has been there for 24 years and he is the former Headmaster of the school.
In this episode, we are going to talk about what we talked about a lot when I worked there—leading at home. During this period of my life, I was single, met my soon-to-be-wife, and I was married. Jeff was very much a mentor to me and we discussed these things while we graded papers or worked out. I hope you can benefit from the discussion.

THE LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF RUSH LIMBAUGH [EPISODE 143]
Friday Feb 19, 2021
Friday Feb 19, 2021
Rush Limbaugh passed away a few days ago. In this episode, I use his words to explain how he rose to prominence and become the ultra-successful conservative standard bearer.
Limbaugh was well-known for being a conservative firebrand, but after listening to this episode you will understand why he was successful (and it had less to do with politics than the way that he thought about himself and his audience).

HOW OUR BRAINS ARE WIRED FOR POLITICAL HATRED [EPISODE 140]
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
Wednesday Feb 10, 2021
As I record, we are in the middle of Trump’s second impeachment trial. As the nation listens to the arguments, partisans agree with half of what is being said, and the viscerally object to the other half. Why? Why are we so politically divided? Why does politics divide us. It has to do with brain wiring and our environment.
In this episode I discuss an article from Rene Levy, a researcher at the University of Washington who spend much of his career studying the emotion of hate.

NOTABLE QUOTABLES: W. CLEMENT STONE ON SUCCESS [EPISODE 138]
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
In this episode, I review a number of quotes by W. Clement Stone. Stone was an incredibly successful businessman, and a disciple of Napoleon Hill. His advice on success is useful to this day.
Here are the quotes I will review. I unpack them in this episode:
“All personal achievement starts in the mind of the individual. Your personal achievement starts in your mind. The first step is to know exactly what your problem, goal or desire is.”
When you discover your mission, you will feel its demand. It will fill you with enthusiasm and a burning desire to get to work on it.”
“Instead of believing the world is plotting to do you harm, choose to believe the world is plotting to do you good. Instead of seeing every difficult challenging event as a negative, see it for what it could be – something that is meant to enrich you, empower you, or advance your causes.”
“To be happy, make other people happy."
“There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.”
“There is more to success than reading self-help books and extracting the philosophy contained in them, and that is action. The true value of a self-help book is not what the writer puts into the book, but what you, the reader, take out of the book and put into your life.”
“Keep your mind on your objective, and persist until you succeed. Study, think and plan.”
“So, you’ve got a problem? That’s good! Why? Because repeated victories over your problems are the rungs on your ladder of success. With each victory, you grow in wisdom, stature and experience. You become a better, bigger, more successful person each time you meet a problem and tackle and conquer it with a positive mental attitude.”
“To solve a problem or to reach a goal, you don’t need to know all the answers in advance. But you must have a clear idea of the problem or the goal you want to reach.”
“You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyze your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping you toward success – or are they holding you back?”
“Be careful the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them.”
“The reason so few people are successful is no one has yet found a way for someone to sit down and slide uphill.”
“Regardless of who you are or what you have been, you can be what you want to be.”
“You always do what you want to do. This is true with every act. You may say that you had to do something, or that you were forced to, but actually, whatever you do, you do by choice. Only you have the power to choose for yourself.”
"Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the magic keys to living your life with integrity."
“Sometimes the things that seem to be adversities turn out to be opportunities in disguise.”
“Effort and work can become fun when you establish specific desirable goals.”
"No matter how carefully you plan your goals they will never be more that pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto."
"Tell everyone what you want to do and someone will want to help you do it."
“Try, try, try, and keep on trying is the rule that must be followed to become an expert in anything.”
“You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by trying.”
“Success is achieved and maintained by those who try, and keep trying, for there is nothing to lose by trying and a great deal to gain if successful. By all means TRY! Do it NOW!!!”
“Thinking will not overcome fear but action will.”
“It takes less work to succeed than to fail.”
“Do it now.”

It seems that the country is being ripped apart and political discourse is not helping. In this episode, I want to take a step back and gain the perspective of history to analyze the problem. You will be surprised by what you hear.

HOW TO ACHIEVE UNITY [EPISODE 135]
Saturday Jan 23, 2021
Saturday Jan 23, 2021
Unity? What is it? How do we gain unity? President Biden made a call for unity at the inauguration. He said, “
“We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts — if we show a little tolerance and humility, and if we're willing to stand in the other person's shoes.”
But the politicians who talk the most about unity are often the worst role models—and it seems the more zealous their followers, the more damage that they tend to do.
However, there is one group of people who can teach us a great deal about how to unify. These people actively build bridges instead of call names. I will talk about them and draw lessons from their activities that can help us gain the unity we seek.

THE BOOK OF PROVERBS ON DISAGREEING RESPECTFULLY [EPISODE 134]
Wednesday Jan 20, 2021
Wednesday Jan 20, 2021
What do the Proverbs say about how to disagree respectfully? How do I disagree without being disagreeable? When I dialogue with others and I wise, a fool, a mocker, or simple?
In this episode, I unpack over 100 verses from the book of proverbs that speak directly to how we should disagree with others. It was quite convicting.
This is a follow-up to last week’s episode. Last week I discussed an article from Psychology Today on how to disagree respectfully.

HOW TO DISAGREE RESPECTFULLY [EPISODE 133]
Saturday Jan 16, 2021
Saturday Jan 16, 2021
It seems that the world is unhinged. Half of the country seems to be living in a parallel universe (and they think the same thing about your half). It is easy to disagree, and it feels like it is becoming easier to be disagreeable. How do you disagree respectfully? How do you disagree productively? How do you disagree politely? How do you disagree without being disagreeable? How do you seek common ground?
In this episode I will discuss all of that. Much of it is mindset and the actions that flow from your mindset. I will draw heavily on an absolutely fantastic article from Psychology Today by Melody Stanford Martin:

Tuesday Jan 12, 2021
Tuesday Jan 12, 2021
Last Wednesday the world watched in disbelief as Trump supporters, perhaps mixed with agitators, desecrated the Capitol Building. The new media has flashed these images relentlessly. The Left is outraged, but the Right is too. There is near-universal condemnation for what happened.
In the wake of these events, Pelosi and Schumer are calling on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. They are formulating new articles of impeachment. Twitter cut off the leader of the free world—FOR LIFE.
In this episode, I will do my best to unpack these events and analyze them through the lens of leadership. I will do my best to see through both sides, and I will give you my analysis of what happened, what is happening right now, and what is likely to happen in the future.

Saturday Dec 12, 2020
Saturday Dec 12, 2020
It seems that every time you turn on the news, you see ethical train wrecks. In this episode, I talk about how you can make more ethical decisions.
Standard business texts propose a 4-prong model for making ethical decisions. I will talk about that and I will propose a different 3-prong model for making ethical decisions.

DRINK COFFEE. SAVE HOMELESS GIRLS IN MEDELLÍN COLOMBIA. HERE’S HOW. [EPISODE 120]
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
64% of Americans drink coffee every day. Want your coffee money to support a great cause? A missionary in Colombia began using coffee to fund a home for homeless girls in Medellín. Many of these girls had turned to prostitution and were pregnant. 100% of the profits from Bebebeans funds this shelter—Esther’s Home (http://www.tministries.org/esther-s-home).
In this episode, Brian tells the story of Esther’s Home, Bebe Beans, and how you can have a part in helping these women.
Please visit the website: www.Bebebeans.com and check it out.
Brian was a guest on the podcast before. In episode 33 and 34, I had Brian Miller on the show. In the first episode, we heard about Brian’s unique perspective on leadership:
In episode 34, Brian tells about street ministry, interacting with Colombian drug dealers, and briefly explains the coffee connection.

THE MINDSET NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS IN NETWORKING [EPISODE 119]
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
In episode 115, I explained how networking can be one of the most kind and genuinely human activities you engage in in business, and I explained how it can provide rocket fuel to your success.
In this episode, I will teach you about the mindset necessary for effective networking. I compare two experiences I had over the last few days and explain how one approach failed miserably and how the other made me a raving fan. It all comes down to mindset.
Before you listen to this episode, please listen to episode 115 because this is really a sequel to that episode and you will have a fuller experience if you listen to one before the other.
