In this episode, I again interview Professor Scott Pearson of Palm Beach Atlantic University. Scott and I talk about the wide gap between the feeling and experience of African Americans and the actual statistics of police killing African Americans.
The discussion was predicated on a viral video where a woman pleads with the cops not to shoot a Black man. While the statistics do not support her suspicion, her fear is real and it must not be discounted if we are to make any progress in race relations. Scott and I talk about bridging the chasm between this visceral fear and the statistics.

In this episode I discuss the first assignment I give in my Leadership Development class. I ask them to find images that answer 4 questions: 1) What I believe leadership is, 2) How your boss approaches leadership, 3). What society thinks about it, and 4) What employees feel as a consequence.
While this appears to be a simple or silly assignment, when you look beneath the surface, you find that it reveals great insight into the both the nature of leadership and the students’ experience with leadership.
I will review 7 of my students’ submissions and you will see how much you can learn from this simple assignment. The purpose of this program is to help you become a better leader. From the protesters to the rioters to those who can’t repeat the BLM slogan due to conscience, you will find out that we have more in common than we think.

When the government of Delhi, India realized that there were too many Cobras, they took decisive government action. The net result: more cobras. How is that possible? It turns out that incentives matter, and people predictably respond to incentives.
In this episode, I talk about unintended consequences. Leaders must be aware that the effects of their actions are not always what they want them to be. Sometimes they are impacted by unintended consequences.
You can control your actions; you cannot necessarily control reactions. For that reason, you must think long and hard about the actions you take.

If you watch the news, you would get the distinct impression that the world has gone mad. I have heard many say that they want to tear down the system (as if what would replace it would be better or THEY would be the ones who got to build the new system).
It is easy to tear down. It is difficult to build up.

I preempted my regularly scheduled podcast to play Senator Tim Scott’s June 17th Speech on floor of US Senate. It was the 5th Anniversary of Mother Emmanuel church shooting, and Scott had been the point person on the Justice Act in the Wake of the Death of George Floyd.
Senate Minority Whip, Dick Durbin (D-IL) called Scott’s legislation “token.” Scott addresses this and other issues related to getting this legislation passed.
Please note that there is a long pause 42 seconds into Scott’s speech as he talks about the Mother Emanuel church shooting. I have placed the full, unedited speech here and I include my own brief commentary after.

Our country is so divided right now. It is not just black and white, but a deep philosophical divide.
Race is currently the way that this divide is manifesting. One side says that racism is about what they (individually) do or do not do. The other side says that race pervades everything--that by definition, only white people can be racist, and that the system is inherently racist. This is because they define racism as structures of power, and for this reason, you hear the term "systemic racism" discussed quite a bit.
Is there a third alternative? I think there is, and Tony Evans described it eloquently in his book Oneness Embraced and the video series by the same name. In this episode, I will discuss some of the ideas Dr. Evans covered.

Have you been unfriended on Facebook because you haven't subscribed to the new orthodoxy? Are you amazed when city leaders talk about defunding their police departments? Were you perplexed when the Paramount Network decided to cancel Cops after 31 years? Cancel. Cancel. Cancel.
What is going on in our culture right now is bigger than race or police brutality. We are at a crossroads where we are either going to continue to have free speech or allow the cultural zeitgeist to overwhelm us. In this episode, I make the argument that we must be able to make arguments. We do not have to agree in order to learn from each other and work on issues that ail us. But there is a growing movement that tolerates no dissent from its viewpoint (ironically in the name of championing all viewpoints). This is tragic because if we preempt the discussion and carry out vigilante justice, we are only demonstrating the belief that might makes right and free speech will be an unfortunate casualty.
